1) Overview of Illinois Emerging Electricity Issues - Speaker: Jon Carls, Managing Supervisor, Key Accounts, Ameren Illinois
This session will be a general overview of topics which will be discussed in the detail portions of the program as well as items
related to Smart Grid such as recently enacted legislation (SB 1652) and continuing emergence of electric vehicles.
2) Renewable Energy, Parallel Generation, Net Metering - Moderator/Speaker: Brian Cuffle, Key Account Executive – Ameren Illinois; Speakers: John Freitag, Vice
President Operations – Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives & Bob Croteau, Energy Planner, City Water Light & Power.
Renewable energy from natural resources is becoming more common with wind and solar installations the most frequent choice of residential and small business consumers. When these consumers choose to connect their generator “to the grid”, there is a Distributed Generation Interconnection process to follow and possible compensation methods when they generate more electricity than they consume. This session will review the requirements and benefits of different programs of several service providers.
3) Energy Efficiency: funding programs and opportunities - Moderator/Speaker: Cheryl Miller, Energy Efficiency Advisor – Ameren Illinois; Speakers: Agnes Mrozowski, Assistant Deputy Director – IL DCEO, Gary Hurley, Energy Efficiency Program Manager – CWLP & John Freitag –
AIEC Legislation passed in 2007 created an Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standards for investor-owned utilities and their customers, requiring reductions in overall electrical energy usage. Funding is provided by monthly charges to customers via utility bills with part of the program administered by utilities and part by DCEO. In addition, municipal utilities and electric cooperatives
have developed EE programs. This session will review some of the commonality of these programs and the benefits they provide to customers in implementing energy efficiency measures.
4) Alternative Energy Supply options - Speaker: Jon Carls, Ameren Illinois
Customers of investor-owned utilities have a choice of who supplies the power & energy portion of their utility service. The utility serves as the Delivery Service Provider and is required for smaller customers to provide an option for power & energy, generally referred to as “default supply”. But other suppliers might be a better option – either through direct purchase or via proposed government aggregation programs. Hourly pricing programs are also available options.
Hospital Takes Parking Garage Lighting to New Level
For more than a century, Advocate BroMenn Medical Center has been in the business of adding days to the lives of its patients. These days, the hospital is even extending the life of its parkinggarage lighting, with a little help from the Ameren Illinois ActOnEnergy® program.
Like most parking garages, the six-deck garage serving Advocate BroMenn is lit around-the-clock for safety reasons. This heavy energy usage makes it an area ripe for efficiency improvements.
“The lighting in our parking garage operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” says Dwight Hill, Director of Facilities Management. “To make matters worse, our metal halide lighting was high maintenance and expensive to operate, so I saw an opportunity for a lighting retrofit.”
To make the most of that opportunity, he turned to a powerful combination: high-efficiency LED lighting and daylight sensors. He also turned to ActOnEnergy.
The estimated annual energy savings of 325,000 kilowatt-hours helped justify the project’s $180,000 costs. Nearly $23,000 in cash incentives from ActOnEnergy sealed the deal and shaved six months off the project’s payback period.
“I applaud the ActOnEnergy program. We probably wouldn’t have gone forward with the project without the incentive,” says Hill. He also credits Springfield Electric, an ActOnEnergy Program Ally, as a helpful resource throughout the ActOnEnergy application process.
With the help of Springfield Electric, in early 2011 Advocate BroMenn replaced more than 250 metal halide fixtures with BetaLED luminaires. The upgrade changed out 175-watt bulbs for 40-watt LED lighting.
Two daylight sensors take energy efficiency to the next level by ensuring that lights are on only when they are needed. One sensor ensures that lights on the outer perimeter of each floor go on only as daylight fades.Another sensor covers the building’s inner perimeter where there is less exposure to natural lightand more need for artificial lighting.
“There’s nothing more efficient than sunlight, and we don’t take advantage of it to the level we should. Photocells help us make the most of this natural energy source,” says ActOnEnergy’s Dave Kilgore. “The two-pronged approach taken by Advocate BroMenn drastically reduced their energy use right out of the gate.”
As an added benefit, the LED lights produce a more attractive, natural light and are immune to temperature-related performance issues. As Hill says, “They perform well in extremely cold temperatures and the quality of light is better – it’s a whiter light.”
Equally attractive is the effect the LEDs will have on the hospital’s bottom line. The kilowatt savings alone will translate into dollar savings of roughly $32,000 every year. Plus, the long-lasting LED lighting will save more than $13,000 every year in reduced maintenance costs.
“We were replacing our metal halide bulbs as often as twice a year,” says Hill. With a lifetime of up to 11 years, the LED lighting will lighten the load on hospital maintenance staff.
“Everybody loves savings,” says Hill. “I actually look forward to getting power bills now to see how much we’ve saved.”

Springfield Lighting & Design - State Journal Register
Published: 11/23/2010
Residential lighting has become infinitely customizable. If you’re still using floor lamps for everyday tasks, candles for romantic evenings, and a pendant porch light shining over the front door, it’s time to catch up. Welcome to the big, beautiful world of accents, ambience, and landscape lighting.
Indoors
The goal is layers of light, says Springfield Electric Lighting and Design showroom supervisor Carla Peavy. High, indirect lights create an overall ambience. Task lights illuminate reading areas, kitchen work spaces, and game tables. Accent lights focus attention on art work and centerpieces. Lighting a room at various levels, or layers, provides a pleasing, well lit effect without glare. “It gives you control of the ambience of the space,” says Peavy.
In lighting trends, Peavy says, “LED (light emitting diode) is taking off. It is a great source of energy savings. So are dimmers, which also provide energy savings.” And recessed lights in a cove or over a fireplace can provide as much beauty or drama as you want.
Indirect lighting in soffits or coves can be used to make the ceiling look higher, the space look larger, or highlight a mural on the ceiling, Peavy says.
“You can use small low-voltage bulbs every few inches in solid outline around a room to create soft, ambient lighting and you won’t see the light source.” Position recessed lights to shine down over a mantel, near the wall or a few feet out, to create interesting scalloped shadows on the wall, highlight a floral arrangement, and “create a nice focal point.” Changing the type of bulb will change the beam spread.
In addition to LEDs and dimmers, new options in computerized controls provide hands-off lighting year round.

New lighting in Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum will save energy, reduce replacement costs, and prolong life of museum murals
SPRINGFIELD – The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in downtown Springfield, Illinois has always shed light on our 16th President’s life and times, and now that light will be “green” as new technology will save energy, reduce replacement costs, and prolong the life of the Museum’s murals.
The new lighting is made possible by a $25,676 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant through the Illinois Capital Development Board, with $25,676 in matching funds provided by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation.
“As the only U.S. President to hold a patent, Abraham Lincoln was always interested in the latest innovations of his time and personally tested some inventions developed during the Civil War. He would no doubt be delighted that the latest technology of the 21st century is being used to save energy and prolong the life of the Museum built in his honor,” said Illinois State Historian Dr. Thomas Schwartz.
